About the filmmakers

John Hughes’ and Tom Zubrycki’s documentary experience as writers, directors and producers spans four decades of award winning films. Both have been recipients of the prestigious Stanley Hawes Award; both have championed the cause of the documentary sector over a long period. Both were engaged with activist video in the 1970s, and with the Filmmakers Co-operatives.

JH’s most recent broadcast film was PEACE PILGRIMS (ABC Compass August 2021); most recent feature documentary SENSES OF CINEMA (90 minutes, 2022) The Films of John Hughes: a history of independent screen production in Australia (Cumming, 2014) is published by ATOM.

Tom Zubrycki

Tom’s recent films as a producer include FAIR GAME (2017), UNDERMINED – TALES OF THE KIMBERLEY (MIFF, 2018), THE WEATHER DIARIES (2020) and ABLAZE (MIFF 2021). As a director Tom’s documentaries have a distinctive observational story-telling style, and have focused around a personal response to the issues of the day.
